ABOUT THE STUDY

Women Holding Hands

STUDY DESCRIPTION

IntelliCare is an interactive, smartphone app program designed to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. It was originally developed at Northwestern University with funding from the National Institute of Mental Health. It has been shown in numerous studies to improve mental health. However, we don't currently know if IntelliCare can improve mental health in patients and survivors of cancer. The purpose of this study is to find out if IntelliCare is an effective way to treat depression and anxiety symptoms in women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Steps

Participation in this study would involve the following:

  1. Fill out the interest form on the home page of this website

  2. ARCS staff will determine if you meet initial eligibility criteria

  3. If you meet initial eligibility criteria, we will contact you by email and schedule a phone interview

  4. During the phone interview, we will explain the study and discuss the criteria for enrollment. We will have time to answer any questions or concerns you may have during the phone call. We will also ask you a few questions about your cancer history and current mental health.

  5. If you are not eligible for the study, we will inform you

  6. If you are eligible and choose to participate, you will electronically sign a consent form

  7. You will be instructed to complete an online questionnaire that will be emailed to you. It takes about 1 hour to complete. The questions will ask you about your health and daily life activities

  8. Once the questionnaire is completed, you will be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to 1 of 2 study groups. You have an equal chance of being assigned to a group. One group will use an app with information about depression and anxiety, and proven coping strategies. The other group will use an interactive app program. The app program includes weekly brief questionnaires and personalized feedback

  9. If you receive the interactive app program, you may be randomized after 1 week to receive help from a "coach." Coaches are trained ARCS staff who will work closely with you to get the most benefit out of the app program. There will be no coaching for those that receive the app with information about depression and anxiety

  10. After 8 weeks, you will be asked to complete another online questionnaire. You will be asked to do this again 6 months and then 12 months later. You may also be asked to participate in a brief phone interview with ARCS staff The interview will focus on your experience with the app you used

  11. We will send you $50 gift certificates after completing the questionnaires at 8 weeks and 6 months. We will send you a $100 gift certificate after completing the questionnaire at 12 months.
